The project addresses two challenges in Nigeria: limited access to reliable electricity in rural and peri-urban communities and low public awareness of renewable energy solutions. Energy poverty continues to affect education, healthcare and economic opportunities, while many young people lack the knowledge and skills needed to support the transition to clean energy. The initiative’s solution is to build local capacity through youth-led education, training and community engagement. It equips young people with practical knowledge of solar energy, energy-efficient technologies and climate action, enabling them to become advocates for renewable energy within their communities. The project promotes the adoption of affordable clean energy solutions through workshops, awareness campaigns and outreach activities, while building partnerships with local organisations, youth groups and development stakeholders. In the future, it also aims to support community-based solar projects for schools and small businesses.
Current costs include organising training workshops, producing educational materials, conducting community outreach and covering transport and coordination expenses. Activities are currently financed through voluntary contributions, in-kind partner support and personal resources. The project is seeking grants, partnerships and youth innovation funding to expand its work. Key challenges include limited access to early-stage funding, low awareness of renewable energy technologies in some communities, and the need to strengthen technical capacity and partnerships to ensure long-term impact. The long-term vision is to build a nationwide youth-led platform that promotes sustainable energy and climate action across Nigeria and eventually other African countries.
