WES Phoenix Solar Lamps is a testing-stage initiative addressing Cameroon’s dual challenges of plastic waste pollution and energy poverty. In Northern Cameroon alone, over 500,000 tonnes of plastic bottle waste are collected annually, while more than 6 million people lack access to affordable electricity. The project provides a cheaper alternative to expensive imported solar systems by assembling solar lamps from recycled plastic bottles, containers, and e-waste—making energy transition inclusive while engaging youth in local manufacturing and reducing plastic pollution.
Currently in operation for less than 12 months with a core team of 2–5 members, the project is funded through user charges, direct sales, government contracts, donations, prizes, and grants.
Expenses are currently focused on research, testing, prototyping, logistics, and waste collection, covered through bootstrapping and profits from installation services.

Vision: To scale Phoenix Solar into a leading circular economy platform across Sub-Saharan Africa. Within three years, the project aims to expand from Cameroon to three additional countries, reaching 50,000 households with affordable solar lighting. Long-term plans include diversifying product lines, establishing decentralized production hubs managed by local youth and women cooperatives, formalizing partnerships with informal waste collectors, and sustaining revenue through direct sales, institutional bulk purchases, and CSR partnerships.
Inspired by the founder’s role as a single mother and commitment to creating opportunities for youth from low-income communities, WES Phoenix Solar Lamps aims to prove that circular, community-powered energy solutions are environmentally necessary, economically scalable, and capable of creating jobs while illuminating millions.
