Project Description

Sustainable Pots (Ollas Sostenibles) is a youth-led initiative in Peru that combines clean energy, sustainable agriculture, and community empowerment to address poverty, food insecurity, and energy access challenges in peri-urban communities. Operating for 3-5 years, the project has already supported more than 2,000 beneficiaries through the implementation of biodigesters, urban gardens, and water treatment solutions.

Its current flagship project focuses on training women in community kitchens to operate a solar-powered hydroponic system integrated with a biodigester. The initiative aims to increase food production, improve household income, reduce waste, and strengthen food security through a circular economy approach. Participants receive technical training in hydroponics, solar energy systems, biodigester management, nutrition, entrepreneurship, and sustainable business development.

Impact: Promotes clean energy access, sustainable food production, women’s economic empowerment, climate resilience, and poverty reduction, contributing to SDGs 1, 2, 5, 7, 8, and 13.

Revenue Model: Donations, grants, prizes, and support from development partners and community organizations.

Expenses: Project management, training delivery, technical supervision, volunteer logistics, hydroponic infrastructure, solar energy systems, biodigesters, and community implementation costs.

Challenges: Building long-term community capacity to operate and maintain the systems independently while ensuring sustainable business models and continued adoption.

Vision: To demonstrate and scale integrated water-energy-food solutions across Peru, enabling vulnerable communities to use clean technologies to generate income, improve food security, and strengthen local resilience through community-led entrepreneurship.

Development Stage: Growth stage, seeking additional funding and partnerships to scale and replicate the model in other regions.
