Sustainable Pioneers is a youth-led startup developing an innovative Cycle-to-Grid (C2G) solution that combines sustainable mobility with renewable energy generation. Operating for 1-3 years and currently in the early development stage, the project transforms retrofitted bicycles into micro-energy generators that convert kinetic energy from cycling into electricity, which is stored and transferred to the grid through dedicated docking stations.
The initiative aims to encourage low-carbon transportation while creating a decentralized source of clean energy. Through a user-friendly mobile application, cyclists earn energy credits and digital rewards based on their riding activity, fostering community engagement and promoting sustainable lifestyles. Initially piloted at University College Dublin, the project plans to expand across Dublin and eventually throughout Ireland.
Impact: Promotes renewable energy generation, sustainable urban mobility, reduced carbon emissions, healthier lifestyles, and community participation in climate action. The initiative contributes to SDGs 3, 7, 11, and 13.
Revenue Model: Sales to individuals and private organizations, bike subscriptions and rentals, energy sales, grants, donations, prizes, sponsorships, and impact investment.
Expenses: Bicycle retrofitting, docking station infrastructure, software and mobile application development, energy tracking systems, staffing, maintenance, pilot testing, marketing, and partnership development.
Challenges: Regulatory approvals, integration with existing energy infrastructure, user adoption, infrastructure deployment costs, funding for expansion, and maintaining cost-effective operations while scaling.
Vision: To create energy-generating smart cities where active mobility contributes directly to renewable energy production. The project aims to scale across multiple cities and countries, integrating smart-grid technologies, AI-driven energy management, and community-based incentives to support urban decarbonization and energy resilience.
Development Stage: Early Development.
