Malagreen Energy is a social enterprise that converts organic waste from households, farms and livestock into biogas for clean cooking and organic fertiliser. The project is dedicated to improve access to affordable renewable energy and reducing dependence on charcoal and firewood. It aims to help reduce deforestation, indoor air pollution and improving waste management. The project combines modular biogas technology with community engagement and youth training. Young people are trained in biogas systems, sustainable agriculture and green entrepreneurship. They learn to install, operate and promote the technology and will gain access to new income-generating opportunities. Pilot projects have been in operation for 1-3 years in rural and peri-urban communitiesand with 2-5 team members and have already demonstrated improvements in energy access, environmental sustainability and youth participation.

The major costs include biogas digester equipment, raw materials, operations and community training. The initial development and pilot activities have been financed through grants from the Tony Elumelu Foundation alongside personal investments from the project team. The goal for future growth is to build a sustainable financing model that combines revenue from product sales with grants and strategic partnerships. Key challenges include limited community awareness of biogas technology and organic fertilisers, high upfront equipment costs, logistical difficulties in reaching remote communities, and the need for continued funding and technical training to expand adoption. The long-term goal of the project is to expand operations across Malawi and neighbouring countries, establish youth training hubs and further develop waste-to-energy technologies
