Project Description

LightReach Solar is a community-focused initiative expanding clean energy access to remote island communities in Tanzania that rely heavily on diesel generators or lack electricity entirely. The project provides affordable solar home systems through PAY-Go technology, enabling households to pay in small instalments while gaining immediate access to electricity.

A distinctive feature is the network of local youth ambassadors who serve as community educators, sales agents, and technical support providers—empowering young people as leaders in sustainable energy adoption while ensuring effective distribution. The initiative also conducts hands-on training on energy efficiency, system safety, and renewable energy benefits, fostering long-term community engagement.

Currently in early development, the project is led by a single founder seeking seed capital and grants to launch pilot activities. Revenue is generated through direct sales to individuals.

Expenses: Solar systems, PAY-Go setup, training materials, outreach activities, logistics, and monitoring tools.

Challenges: Securing funding, reaching remote islands logistically, ensuring maintenance and support, building community trust, recruiting and training ambassadors, and navigating regulatory requirements.

Vision: To create a sustainable, youth-driven energy ecosystem across Tanzania. The long-term plan involves scaling through partnerships with microfinance institutions, expanding solutions for households, schools, and small businesses, and developing a replicable model for clean energy access across underserved regions.

Inspired by firsthand observation of energy poverty’s impact on education and livelihoods, LightReach Solar combines technology, finance, and education to empower communities, foster local entrepreneurship, and advance SDG 7.
