JuaLink is a clean energy initiative that uses solar PV systems to provide reliable electricity for essential community services in Africa. The project demonstrates solar energy’s social impact by power cooling systems, lighting for students studying at night, and temperature-controlled medicine storage, helping communities cope with frequent power outages, extreme heat and limited access to electricity. The initiative is designed to be a practical demonstration of how renewable energy can improve education, healthcare and everyday living while reducing reliance on unreliable grid power. The project has been operating for less than a year and currently the bigest costs include solar panels, batteries, inverters, wiring and basic assembly tools.
The project is entirely self-funded through personal savings, with future growth expected to rely on grants, partnerships and technical support. Key challenges include limited funding for equipment, the need for technical guidance to optimise system performance, limited access to pilot sites and community partners, and the difficulty of managing the project with one sole team member. Building community awareness of the benefits of solar energy is also challenging but important for wider adoption. The long-term goal is to develop modular solar systems for schools, healthcare facilities and households across Africa, while expanding the initiative to involve youth teams and local partners.
