Project Region: Latin America and the Caribbean
Focus Area: Research and Development
Project Phase: Early Development

Project Description

Energy Communities in Colombia is an early-stage, youth-led research and development initiative focused on understanding the growth potential of grid-connected energy communities in Colombia. Led by an environmental engineer and master’s student specializing in energy transition, the project aims to develop a system dynamics model that evaluates the factors that promote or limit the adoption of energy communities across the country.

Operating for less than 12 months, the initiative examines the potential impacts of energy communities on the electrical grid, energy companies, environmental sustainability, economic development, and local communities. The project also seeks to generate evidence-based policy recommendations to support Colombia’s energy transition and strengthen community participation in clean energy systems. Solar PV is currently being assessed as a key renewable energy technology within the research.

Impact: Supports research, policy development, community energy adoption, and sustainable energy transition efforts, contributing primarily to SDGs 7, 9, 11, and 13.

Revenue Model: Currently none. The initiative is being developed as an academic research project.

Expenses: Research activities, data collection, analysis, and information gathering.

Challenges: Limited project experience, access to information, and the need for stronger research and collaboration opportunities.

Vision: To contribute to Colombia’s energy transition through evidence-based research on energy communities, inform policy development, and expand future academic research, including doctoral-level studies in the field.

Development Stage: Early Development stage.
