Project Description

Matarbari Energy Transition Initiative is a youth-led advocacy and research initiative in Bangladesh working to promote a socially just transition from coal-based energy to renewable energy systems. Operating for 1-3 years, the project focuses on addressing the environmental and social impacts associated with the Matarbari coal power plant, including community displacement, biodiversity loss, and marine ecosystem degradation.

Through policy research, community engagement, awareness campaigns, and youth mobilization, the initiative advocates for sustainable energy alternatives and increased investment in renewable energy. It works closely with affected communities to amplify local voices while developing evidence-based recommendations that support cleaner and more equitable energy planning in Bangladesh.

Impact: Promotes renewable energy transition, environmental protection, community participation, and climate justice, contributing to SDGs 7, 13, 14, 15, and 16.

Revenue Model: User charges and service fees, donations, grants, prizes, and project-based funding support.

Expenses: Community outreach, research activities, advocacy campaigns, awareness events, stakeholder engagement, and programme coordination.

Challenges: Limited funding, policy and regulatory barriers, resistance from fossil fuel interests, community engagement constraints, and the need for continuous public awareness and education.

Vision: To transform Matarbari into a national model for a just and renewable energy transition by strengthening youth-led advocacy, influencing clean energy policies, supporting affected communities, and developing scalable approaches that prioritize climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, and social equity.

Development Stage: Growth stage, with active advocacy, research, and community engagement activities seeking to expand impact and partnerships nationwide.
