Project Phase: Early Development

Project Description

EolicALL is a student-led engineering initiative supplying off-grid rural communities in Mexico with clean water and electricity through low-power, decentralized wind turbines. Mexico possesses immense wind energy potential, particularly in regions like the Isthmus of Tehuantepec—yet communities living in these high-wind corridors often lack basic energy access, as large-scale wind farms frequently benefit third parties rather than addressing local energy poverty.

The project designs and manufactures turbines using accessible, sustainable materials to keep costs low. Deployment empowers communities through training programs, enabling local residents to operate and maintain the systems—building local capacity and ensuring true autonomy. By democratizing wind energy, EolicALL provides marginalized communities with the infrastructure to thrive.

Currently in early development with 1–3 years of operation and a core team of 6–10 members, the project is funded through donations, prizes, grants, and in-kind university support from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), which provides laboratory space and machining tools.

Expenses: Electronic components, mechanical fabrication materials, and future deployment logistics.
Challenges: Engineering under financial constraints (requiring repurposed materials like PVC pipes), operational logistics balancing volunteer workloads, and lack of mentorship to bridge the gap between lab prototyping and sustainable community micro-grids.
Vision: To drive Mexico’s decentralized energy transition by transforming marginalized communities into autonomous operators. Near-term goals include standardizing turbine architecture for reliable, cost-effective manufacturing. Within three years, the initiative aims to scale from initial pilots to multiple off-grid communities nationwide, establishing a reproducible, youth-led framework for micro-scale energy infrastructure and combating energy poverty across Mexico.
