Project Description

The Hybrid Solar Lighting System is a youth-led clean energy initiative making household lighting more affordable and reliable by combining solar power with modular, retrofit-friendly design. Rather than requiring families to overhaul their entire energy setup, the project focuses on a high-impact entry point—lighting and essential loads—that can be piloted quickly, improved iteratively, and scaled through partnerships.

Currently in the testing and prototyping phase with 3–5 years of operation and a core team of 6–10 members, the concept has been nominated for the James Dyson Award and featured by Springwise. The solution is designed to be maintainable and measurable, with clear indicators such as energy savings, reliability during outages, and user adoption.

Revenue Model: User charges, direct sales, government contracts, donations, prizes, and grants.

Expenses: Prototyping components, testing and validation, logistics, documentation, safety checks, and field trials—currently covered through personal funding and in-kind support.

Challenges: Moving from concept to pilot-ready solution, component sourcing, installation practicality, performance validation, building a scalable model, and capacity constraints.

Vision: To scale from pilot deployments in Malaysia into a replicable model adaptable across the Asia Pacific region. Near-term goals include finalizing a pilot-ready prototype, conducting structured field pilots with clear KPIs, and building an evidence base demonstrating energy savings and user adoption. Medium-term plans involve formalizing the initiative into a sustainable entity and developing local partner networks. Long-term, the project aims to expand beyond lighting to support essential loads, integrate data-driven monitoring, and enable partnerships with governments and utilities.
